What to do when you don’t know what to do...

ysoyak

When you’ve been out of work for a while (voluntarily or involuntarily) and you’re wanting to get back into work, it can sometimes be hard to know where to start.

It’s often an emotional rollercoaster ride—but not always the fun kind. It's the type of ride where the track seems to disappear halfway through, leaving you dangling in mid-air and wondering what’s next.

Unemployment isn’t just about the lack of regular income; it’s a shift that rewrites your daily routine, and often invites a revolving door of unsolicited advice from well meaning friends & relatives who haven’t updated their CVs since the 90s.

Being out of work can also start to affect your confidence, it can make you feel lonely and isolated from “the real world”.

Social media doesn’t help either. One scroll through LinkedIn, and you’re suddenly faced with Susan’s new promotion, John’s startup success, and a meme reminding you to "rise and grind."

But here’s the thing: being out of work can be an amazing opportunity!!

It’s a rare chance to pause and recalibrate. So how do you best use this time to land work you’ll genuinely love?

1. Find your 'Why': Take a step back and reflect. What gets you excited to get out of bed? (And no, “morning coffee” doesn’t count.) This is the time to identify your core values and what you truly want from your career.

2. Connection: It’s about building genuine connections. Reaching out to former colleagues, attending industry events, or joining online groups. It can also be about finding a new tribe. Being deliberate about spending time with people who inspire you and want the best for you!

3. Rediscovering YOU: Take time to discover what makes you tick. What’s special about you? What are your superpowers? Your passions?

4. Experiment: Take a class, volunteer, or freelance. Trying something new can spark ideas and open doors you didn’t even know existed.

5. Stay positive: Job hunting can be a slog, so celebrate small wins. Landed an informational interview? That’s a win. Updated your LinkedIn profile? Another win. Keeping a positive outlook doesn’t mean ignoring the challenges; it means not letting them define you.

With the right mindset and strategy, you can turn this chapter into the prologue of your best career move yet!
