16 simple ways to make your workday more fun!

Stuck in a job that you don’t enjoy, but feel like you have to stay in it...at least for the time being*?

Here are 16 simple ways to make your workday a lot more fun…without sacrificing productivity, or getting fired!

  1. Start your day with your favourite upbeat song, have a little dance & sing along at home or on your commute (extra points if you do a little jig on public transport!)

  2. Give each day a fun theme (e.g. “Tidy-Up Tuesday” or “Feel-Good Friday”) to build anticipation and creativity.

  3. Brighten your workspace with fun colors, plants, or personal artwork. It makes a surprising difference to your mood.

  4. Look up (or make up) a new joke every day and find a friend at work with whom you can exchange it.

  5. Schedule 5–10 minute breaks to do something that brings you joy: a dance break, doodle, short walk, or quick game.

  6. Feel like no one recognises your awesome work? Give yourself that pat on the back then. Reward yourself whenever you finish a task, with a star sticker, a chocolate bar, a cup of your favourite coffee…

  7. Use fun or beautiful stationery, silly timers, or colourful to-do lists etc to turn mundane tasks into playful ones.

  8. Turn your work into a game: use points, challenges, or timers to “beat the clock.”

  9. Learn something slightly random every day, like a weird fact or skill.

  10. Use silly backgrounds on Zoom…see if anyone notices!

  11. Start a “Compliment Jar”. Every time someone says something kind to you, write it down on a piece of paper and pop it in a jar to read when you’re having a rubbish day. Or you could note it down on your phone.

  12. Aim to compliment one person every single day for 2 weeks.

  13. Play ‘Work Bingo’. Create a bingo card of words or phrases that get used all the time in your workplace. Tick them off during the day. You can also reverse this and choose 10 words to randomly throw into conversations.

  14. Wear something that makes you feel awesome. Might even be your favourite underwear!

  15. Give mundane tasks silly names. Rename your projects with ridiculous or movie-inspired code names (e.g. “Operation Spreadsheet Thunder”).

  16. Mark random days like “National donut day” or “Talk like a pirate day” and observe them with colleagues.
