One of the main reasons so many people get stuck in their careers is because they're not sure what's next. Sound familiar?
They can't see beyond the confines of their current world. They're not able to envisage what might be possible for them.
If you’ve ever heard of the 'Elephant Rope' story, you’ll
know about the elephant trainer who explains that baby elephants are tied up with a small rope which they could easily break away from as they get older. However, even when they’re older they believe the rope can still hold them, so they never try to break free.
Don't be an elephant! Don’t be constrained by what you think is realistic, sensible or possible!
It’s okay to think outside of the box.
People are making money now in ways that we couldn’t have dreamed of a few years ago. Here are some examples of some of the extraordinary ways people are earning a living:
Trevor Hooton is a professional cuddler, charging £75/hr at the time of writing this.
Freddie Beckitt earns a living queuing for people who are too busy or just don’t enjoy queuing.
Grace Page is a professional mermaid! She runs a business that enables people and businesses to book a mermaid for parties, events and filming.
I would argue strongly that your chance of finding any of these jobs by scrolling through job ads is minimal at best. You may not want to be a professional cuddler, queuer or mermaid, but is it possible that your dream job hasn’t been created or dreamed up yet? Is it just waiting for YOU to do just that?
While I was having countless conversation and conducting (seemingly) endless research for my book I decided to create something that might be helpful to anyone who feels stuck in their job and doesn't really know what they'd like to do instead.
I put together 10 slightly unusual, but super powerful questions to stop going round in circles and get closer to working out what a life beyond your current job could look like. You can access them for free here.
I hope you find them useful!
ps. the reviews of my new book 'Ready to quit your job?' are starting to come in and they're better than I ever could have wished for. Here are a small handful of them...
