“By far the 2 choices that will either impart upon me the greatest happiness or the greatest misery is choice of spouse and choice of profession” - Professor Gad Saad (taken from his conversation with Steve Bartlett on the Diary of a CEO podcast)
Due to the nature of my work I’m inclined to agree wholeheartedly with Professor Saad. At least with the bit about your profession affecting your happiness; romantic relationships fall outside my area of professional expertise.
To paraphrase Professor Saad, what better way to start the day than staring lovingly into the eyes of a spouse you’re in a happy, healthy relationship with?
But that joy is short-lived if you must then bid them farewell and head to work (the home office, spare room, kitchen table) to face yet another day of feeling stressed, anxious, bored or unfulfilled. It’s estimated that the average full-time worker spends around 90 THOUSAND hours of their life at work. That’s a lot of hours!
Conversely, if you happen to have a great partner AND a career you love, you’re onto something pretty special.
I’d love your thoughts. There are obviously other factors that affect our happiness levels, but would you agree that your spouse and your profession are the 2 main factors that impact your happiness? Are there other factors that are more important in your experience?
